Qu Opera

The Qu Opera, an opera genre derived from balled singing, is one of the main types of drama in Henan area. It is also called the "Hathpace Melody" since it was developed around the 1920s on the basis of the folk arts of Walking on Stilts and the drum tune. Gradually, it absorbed some artistic characteristics of other operas. The accompanying instruments include the zhuiqin (a stringed instrument), the Chinese trichord, the sheng (a reed pipe wind instrument), the guzheng (a Chinese zither with 25 strings), theerhu (urheen), and thepipa (Chinese lute). The content features mostly folk tales, stories of family life, and love stories, either tragic or comic.
